Writing Workshops for Veterans

On the first Wednesday of every month, I lead a Writing Workshop for War Veterans at the San Diego Vet Center, 2790 Truxton Road, Suite 130, San Diego, CA 92106. If you’re a veteran living in the San Diego area and would like to participate, call 858.642.1500 for more details.

I also offer a kind of online workshop at The Warriors Wall website. Click here to learn more.

In Their Own Words

Here’s what some of the participants of the Vet Center Writing Workshop have said about it in emails to the Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation, the initial underwriters of the program:

“Writing was always one of my strengths throughout my educational career, and I have not had the opportunity to use this skill in many years. With Sue’s help, I have picked up writing again and dusted it off like a favorite old tool to be put to creative use. It has inspired me to think creatively and to turn the spotlight of perspective upon my past. Again, thanks for helping to turn back on the creative light of writing for this veteran.” - M.G.
“I am a Vietnam veteran, and even though I just started the workshop, it has become extremely important to me, and I look forward to it. After a day’s work I usually go home and isolate in my room and live inside my head fighting depression and a host of other demons. The workshop has enabled me to jump out of myself, and at the same time bond with others in a similar plight.” – T.M.
“I have had the distinct joy and privilege to be a member of the Veterans Writing Workshop led by Sue Diaz in San Diego these past several weeks. I have been trying to write my memoir over these past several years. I had no direction in my work. I did not know how to dig deeper and pull out the past. I did not know how to write honestly. Sue taught me how to do all of this and much more. . .This is my first writers’ workshop with Sue and I plan to enroll in the next workshop as well. The work that she does with veterans to heal the past is amazing.” - M.H.
“Again I find myself thanking Sue for inspiring me and other members of our class. We are and probably will be greatly in her debt for sharing her intelligence and experience while helping us to have the courage of our convictions to write from within about all things great and small.” – W.P.
